Longtime Bunker Links Golf Pro passes away

The man who served as golf pro at Bunker Links golf course for more than 24 years passed away Monday at the age of 63.

Greg L. Merrill was a fixture of Bunker Links, working as the course’s pro for nearly three decades. He retired from that post in December of last year.

Galesburg Parks and Recreation Director, Larry Cox worked alongside Merrill for 14 years.

Cox tells WGIL Merrill will not soon be forgotten.

“I’m sure he’ll be missed by a lot of people. He was just a really nice person, really cared about the customers at Bunker Links and really cared about the course and the people out there.”

Merrill, known by many as “Mudd” received his PGA Tour Card in 1989, dedicating his life to the game he loved as a lifetime member of PGA of America.

When he wasn’t on the links he loved spending time with his family and his dogs in Monmouth.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 15 years, Glenda along with four step-children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Visitation will be Friday at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home.
