Pinched by budget woes, Peoria goes after unpaid tickets

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Pinched by shrinking budgets, the city of Peoria is getting tough when it comes to collecting unpaid parking tickets.

City Treasurer Patrick Nichting is putting scofflaws on notice that authorities will garnish their income tax refunds, lottery winnings and state payroll checks if they don’t pay up.

He told reporters Tuesday that the city needs “an extra heavy hand during these difficult budget issues.”

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that more than $1.8 million in unpaid parking fines is owed to the city.

Peoria is getting help from a state debt recovery program in its effort to collect.
