Chicago man gets 80 years in gang-related shooting

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago gang member convicted of murder in the shooting death of a man on the city’s West Side in 2009 has been sentenced to 80 years in prison. In a news release, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office says that 27-year-old Lonnial Roundtree is the second of two men to receive an 80-year prison sentence after being convicted of the slaying of a “high ranking member of a rival street gang.”

In September, 39-year-old Reginald Royal received the same sentence.

According to prosecutors, the two approached the rival gang member outside a home while he was with a Chicago Housing Authority inspector. They opened fire, killing one man and injuring the inspector.

Police heard the gunfire and arrested Roundtree and Royal after a car chase.
