Democratic state Sen. Biss won’t run for comptroller in 2016

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois state Sen. Daniel Biss says he won’t seek the Democratic nomination for state comptroller in 2016.

The move sets up a potential general election between Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza and Republican incumbent Leslie Munger.

Biss, from Evanston, has been a lawmaker since 2011. He tells The Chicago Tribune that he wants to avoid an “expensive and divisive battle” for the party.

Monday marks the start of the petition filing period for the March primary.

The 2016 contest is a special election due to the death of Republican Judy Baar Topinka. She died last year after winning another term as comptroller.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed Munger to the post.

Mendoza is in her second term as clerk and had previously been a member of the Illinois House.
