Nurse faces felony charges after patient passes away

A nurse at Marigold Rehabilitation and Health Care faces one count of aggravated battery of a senior citizen for allegedly choking and punching a resident at the nursing home.According to police reports, Claude R. Shinall of Galesburg told officers he choked the victim who had dementia and had been combative.

A different Marigold employee found the victim in his room with a bloody nose and blood on the pillow, mattress and floor when the resident said he’d been punched, choked and kicked by a male nurse.

Attending medics said the patient had “severe bruising” on his neck and nose; appearing to be choked and punched.

During his police interview Shinall mentioned he has anger problems and acknowledge he had gotten upset at the uncooperative patient.

Police were called to OSF St. Mary Medical Center because of the nature of the man’s injuries.

The victim passed away last Wednesday — the day of Shinall’s arrest — at a nursing home in Monmouth.

Shinall’s bond was set at $150,000. He’ll appear in court tomorrow for a bond reduction hearing as well as a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m.
