Bond reduction denied in case of abused nursing home resident

knox county courthouseA Knox County judge denied a request to reduce the $150,000 bond in the case of a former Marigold Rehabilitation and Health Care nurse accused of battering an elderly resident.

Galesburg Police Officer Mark McLaughlin told the court yesterday 24-year-old Claude R. Shinall was arrested last Wednesday after investigation led police to believe the Galesburg man had punched and choked the 70 year old victim.

Shinall faces one count of aggravated battery of a senior citizen, a felony worth up to 10 years in prison.

While in custody, Shinall told police he had anger problems and was tired of helping the nursing home resident into his bed after rolling out.

Shinall admitted to choking the resident, adding that he never constricted his hand, but had pressed down on the man’s neck.

State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer says the victim died last week in a Monmouth nursing home, more than a month after the beating was originally reported.

After yesterday’s proceedings, Pepmeyer said he will consider additional charges depending on the results of the deceased victim’s autopsy.

Judge Thomas Ewing presided over the bond reduction and preliminary hearings. Shinall remains in the Knox County jail awaiting a Dec. 23 arraignment.
