Filing for March primary has begun

election dayYesterday marked the first day for Illinois candidates to file for their party’s nomination in next year’s March 15 primary election.

Locally, Republican candidate Bob Bondi and Democrat John Hunigan, both of Galesburg, have filed for election on the Knox County Board in District 2.

In District 4, Republicans Shawn A. Cisna of Galva and Jared M. Hawkinson, of Knoxville, have also filed for County Board seats.

Ricardo “Rick” Sandoval, an Abingdon Republican, is running for a seat in District 5.

Meanwhile, in the 74th District, Republicans Mike DeSutter of Woodhull, Wayne Saline of Rio and Dan Swanson of Alpha have filed for the seat of Don Moffitt, who said he will not run for re-election.

Democrat Bill Butts has announced he is running for the representative seat, but has not filed as of Tuesday.

In the 93rd District, Macomb Republican Norine Hammond faces Democratic newcomer John Curtis, also of Macomb.

East Moline Democrat Cheri Bustos has not yet filed for election in the 17 Congressional District, however, Republican newcomer Patrick Harlan of Galesburg has filed.

And Democrat Dave Hansen of Galesburg squares off against Macomb Republican Heidi Benson for the judge vacancy in Ninth Judicial Circuit Court left by retired Chief Judge James B. Stewart.

Galesburg Election Commission Director Lisa Watson tells WGIL people should get out there and vote.

“Voting is important because it’s an opportunity to make a difference in our local area, the state and the nation,” Watson says.

Early voting begins Feb. 4 and runs through election day on March 15th.
