hemmer, klausKlaus H. Hemmer, 69, of Illiopolis, IL passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

In March of 2013, he was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood disease, and in October of 2014 it advanced into Leukemia. His faith was enduring throughout his battle, and his loving wife and two daughters were with him every step of the way.

He was born on February 4, 1946 in Essen-Borbeck, Germany, the son of Karl and Gertrud Hemmer. In 1955 he moved to the United States with his family and became a U.S. citizen. October 24, 1986, he married Natalie Stoneking in Amboy, IL.

Klaus was a veteran of the U.S. Navy stationed on the U.S.S. Waller during the Vietnam War. He was an accomplished electrician and electrical contractor. He was a loving father of two daughters. He loved to cook, and his hobbies included working on his family horse farm, boating, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Natalie of Illiopolis, IL; daughter Hanna (Tim) Rustemeyer of Fulton, MO; daughter Mercedes (Andrew Tucker) of Neenah, WI; step-granddaughter Rylie Rustemeyer; brothers Peter (Linda) Bergmann of Galesburg, IL and Michael (Ann) Hemmer of Bettendorf, IA; sister Lindsy (Gary) Adkins of Au Gres, MI; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Karl and Gertrud.

Funeral arrangements are being taken care of by Watson-Thomas Funeral Home in Galesburg, IL. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home, 1849 N. Seminary Street. Mass will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 858 S. Academy Street, at 11:00 AM. Rev. William T. Miller, IC will officiate. Graveside services will be held after mass at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Galesburg, IL.  A luncheon is being planned after services for family and friends; all are welcome to join. Memorials may be made in memory of Klaus to  Resurrection Parish, 410 Anne St, Illiopolis, IL 62539. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
