Last week the county finance committee settled on a budget to submit to the full board that included moving $250,000 from the Mary Davis home to cover the deficit in the general fund.

But during last night’s full board meeting, Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis said she anticipates the bill’s that need to be paid would require more funds.

A total of $500,000 was moved from the Mary Davis Home.

After some discussion, board member begrudgingly approved of the move admitting they had little choice to pay bills that had already been racked up.

A resolution was also passed that if a department goes over budget on a line item they now have to show why they went over budget.

Finance Committee Chairman Greg “Chops” Bacon tells WGIL the committee should have a way to tell exactly what money’s being used for.

“If you have a professional service line item, but you’re using some of that money to pay for waste removal over here, that’s not right,” Chops says. “The bill’s getting paid, but we should have a waste removal line item to take that money out of instead of taking it out of professional services.”

He says since he’s been on the board he’s all too often seen departments make changes in their line item budgets and this resolution gives the board supervision over why those changes are being made.
