Historic re-enactors gather at former French fort

PRAIRIE DU ROCHER, Ill. (AP) — A group of historic re-enactors is setting up camp at a former French fort in southern Illinois as a tribute to an 18th century voyage from southeast Missouri to New Orleans.

Fort de Chartres State Historic Site south of St. Louis hosts the group of history buffs on Saturday and Sunday. The free event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m. both days.

The re-enactors will portray militia and families from Ste. Genevieve, Missouri returning home from a trip to Louisiana.

The original fort was built on the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1720s in what at the time was a French territory. The reconstructed fort is located west of Prairie du Rocher in Randolph County.
