YMCA to expand into downtown

YMCAThe Knox County YMCA announced yesterday plans to open a million dollar, 24-hour workout facility in downtown Galesburg.

The Y is launching a capital campaign, termed “Our Community, Our Y,” to raise the $1,017,000 to cover startup costs, construction and equipment.

Adam Sampson, CEO of the Knox County Y, says in a news release, “Many organizations and companies in Knox County have already pledged to the success of the project, showing just how important this is to the community.”

The Y claims to be “at capacity” with 8,400 members in the county this year, what they call “an all-time high.”

The downtown branch is planned for the first floor of the old Wells Fargo building at the corner of Prairie and Main streets and would allow for the implementation of the “Solutions Program,” which is described as a mentoring program for junior high and high schoolers.
