Chicago police officer who fatally shot teen due in court

CHICAGO (AP) — A white Chicago police officer charged with murder after a squad car video caught him fatally shooting a black Chicago teenager 16 times returns to court to learn whether he’ll be offered bond.

A Monday hearing for Officer Jason Van Dyke comes after days of protests in Chicago over the killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

A Cook County judge ordered that the 37-year-old Van Dyke remain in custody after he was charged last Tuesday. The judge said he wanted to see the video before deciding the issue of bond.

The video shows Van Dyke jumping out of his squad car last year and shooting McDonald as he walked away from police with a small knife. The video was released on the same day Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder.
