Shedding light on Galesburg’s darkness

Galesburg-city-signAny town of Galesburg’s size is bound to have a few dark tales.

Galesburg’s Darkness is a blog written by 31-year-old Talbot Fisher, who writes about the sordid stories of Galesburg’s past.

Fisher, who has lived in Galesburg since he was a child, says he does most of his research on microfilm at the Galesburg Public Library, digging up old crime articles in the town’s newspapers and other sad or otherwise strange stories.

He tells WGIL one story in particular that stood out was a 1927 article about a man murdered between Galesburg and Abingdon.

“It was just very random to happen the way it happened,” Fisher says. “He was on a date with hi girlfriend and stopped to fix the car and a guy walked up and shot him. And they never caught the guy.”

Stories like that show an intriguing — and daunting — side of the town that warrants exploration, Fisher says.

“Some of it is so similar to things you see today even though it’s been 50, 60, 70 80 years,” he says. “Or it’s stuff that you can’t imagine happening today. People forget it and I like to remember that stuff.”

He adds that the blog, which can be found at galesburgdarkness.wordpress.com, has been visited by more than 850 unique viewers since it began earlier this month.
