GHS Silver Streaks Vs. Rock Island Rocks

WGIL 262

Here is a recap of tonight’s game courtesy of WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:

“Everything looked well for the Galesburg Silver Streaks who had a 21-14 lead over the Rock Island Rocks at halftime and scored on their first possession of the second half to take a 28-14 lead. But then the Rocks stormed back, scoring 21 consecutive points and the defense shut down Galesburg, which the Rocks were unable to do in the first half, eventually took a 35-28 lead. Galesburg responded with a scoring drive to tie the game at 35, DeAndre Moren ran in a 33yd touchdown that tied it up at 35, but the Rocks, again, came back. With 3:40 to go in the game, Rock Island put together a 14 play scoring drive that covered 64yds and a 9yd touchdown pass put them up 41-35 and left the Streaks with only 12 seconds to run the kick-off back, and eventually 6.5 seconds to run their only play from scrimmage, which was a pass completion to Nick Myler but the Streaks got only about 25yds of the 74 they needed to have a chance to tie the game.

“So Galesburg loses a heart breaker at home to Rock Island 41-35. Both the Rocks and the Streaks are now 3-1 in the Western Big 6 with a 1 game lead over Moline, Quincy, and Alleman with 1 week to play. And Galesburg, Rock Island, and Quincy are all 4-3 overall with playoff implications on the line, especially when the Streaks travel down to Quincy next Friday night. But Rock Island is in the driver’s seat with both teams tied at 3-1, but the Rocks defeated Galesburg, they have advantage of the tie-breaker. Sophomores also lost 26-7. It was just a tough night overall for the Galesburg football program as the Varsity drops it 41-35.”

Galesburg Silver Streaks Football vs. Rock Island Alleman Pioneers

WGIL 564

Here’s a recap of tonight’s game courtesy of WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:

“A crazy night of football at Rock Island’s Augustana College, which started with a lengthy power outage in Rock Island that delayed the game between the Silver Streaks and the Pioneers by a good 45 minutes, and ended up continuing on just as crazy as it could be. It was a bit of an offensive ‘power outage’ throughout the first half. Silver Streaks had a couple of touchdowns negated by one questionable fumble call and another negated because of a holding penalty. Both teams went to the locker rooms in a scoreless tie. Silver Streaks finally found the offense on a 9 yd touchdown pass from Jacob Ross to Nick Myler to open up the scoring in the 3rd quarter. And then they tacked on two touchdowns in the 4th Quarter, again a Ross to Myler connection of 57 yds which made it 14 to nothing.

“And then Fernando Diaz with a key interception on Alleman’s next to last possession of the game. He returned the ball down into Alleman territory, a 15 yd personal foul penalty moved the Streaks to the 26, then four plays later Nick Myler scored the third touchdown of the game which put the game out of reach. Galesburg also featured two goal line stands which kept Alleman out of the endzone and it resulted in Galesburg’s first back to back shut-out since 1990. They’re also alone in first place, 3-0 in the conference for the first time since 1991, with a chance to wrap up an outright conference title next Friday night at home when the Rock Island Rocks come to town.

“Silver Streaks sophomores lost a shortened game due to the power outage 16-7 but the varsity with a big win, 21-0 to spoil Alleman’s Homecoming.”

Galesburg Silver Streaks football vs. the United Township Panthers

WGIL 393

Here is a recap of tonight’s(9/25) game courtesy of WGIL’s Brad Bennewitz:

“Galesburg Football team had some fun at the expense of the United Township Panthers at Van Dyke field tonight(9/25) routing UT 49-0 and the Silver Streaks really didn’t even have that great of a night offensively. They had two big defensive touchdowns to really open up the game. Tyree Mitchell had a 60yd interception return for a touchdown that was the Streaks 2nd score of the night and later in the game Jason Kelly Stripped the ball out of the UT Panthers’ quarterback’s hands and ran it back 92yds, the Streaks second defensive touchdown of the night and four turnovers forced against the Panthers.

“There was also a 49yd touchdown run by DeAndre MorenJacob Ross had a big touchdown, a 67yd pass to Nick Myler. So it was a big play night, but as big for the defense as much as anything as the Silver Streaks got their first shutout against an opponent since the opening game of the 2010 season when they defeated Chicago Academy. Galesburg’s now 3-2 on the season, more importantly 2-0 in the Western Big 6 Conference as they head up to Alleman next week for the Pioneers Homecoming at Augustana College. Galesburg sophomores also made a victory to complete the sweep on the night 27-12 over the UT sophomores.”

As Brad stated above, the boys will be playing again next Friday at Augustana College against the Alleman Pioneers. That game is set just a bit later than more recent ones with a pre-game time of 7:25 and kick-off looking to start at 7:40. You can catch all of the action on 93.7FM and 1400Am WGIL, WGIL.com or the TuneIn app with live play by play from Brad Bennewitz and Jim Lee.

Galesburg Silver Streaks Football vs. Moline Maroons

WGIL 737

SpotLight-GHS-Sports-FootBaThe GHS Silver Streaks beat the Moline Maroons 21-14 for Galesburg’s Homecoming game that took two day to complete. Last night around 8:30 with the game tied at 7 with 7:36 left in the half, there was a lightning delay that ultimately resulted in the postponement of the game until 1pm today(9/19). After holding the tie through to halftime Galesburg pulled ahead early in the 3rd quarter to lead 14-7 only to have Moline catch up shortly after and tie it once again at 14. Galesburg then got a 3rd and final touchdown in the 4th quarter bringing their lead to 21-14. However, with 5 minutes left in the game, Moline had plenty of time to tie it up and possibly send the game into overtime. That thought was cut short when Fernando Diaz caught the game ending interception with just 3:26 left to play. Galesburg held onto the ball for the final 3 and a half minutes and got their first win at home for the season. This brings them to 2-2 for the season and 1-0 in the conference. Moline is now 1-3 for the season and 0-1 in the conference. Galesburg will be playing again next Friday against United Township with a pre-game time set for 7:06 and kick off scheduled to go about 7:30. You can tune in and catch all the action on 93.7FM and 1400AM WGIL, WGIL.com, or the TuneIn app with play by play from Brad Bennewitz and Jim Lee.
