Galesburg High School Athletic Director Ralph Henning joined us to talk about the upgrade of the athletic facilities at GHS.
There was hope that the Silver Streak baseball and softball teams would get to play some home games this season. Mother nature decided not to cooperate and the decision was made collectively that the new facilities will not be ready before the end of the season. We talked about this as well as the other spring sports with GHS Athletic Director Ralph Henning on the WGIL Morning News.
It’s Wednesday, and that means there’s a light schedule of area ballgames to be played here at midweek. In baseball, Knoxville travels to United and North Fulton is at Rushville. In softball, Galesburg plays at Knoxville; Monmouth-Roseville travels to Ridgewood; and North Fulton hosts Brimfield/Elmwood.
Members of the Galesburg School Board say they’re pleased the winter weather and early spring rains haven’t slowed down construction of the new athletic complex at Galesburg High School very much, if at all.
Weather conditions, while not warm, have improved today and should allow some of the area baseball and softball games to be be played. The schedule shows Knox College will be at Augustana for a non-conference game this afternoon, while here in Galesburg, Carl Sandburg will host Blackhawk.
Galesburg High School graduate Chad Johnson joined us recently to talk about his pro baseball career.
Chad Johnson is a 2012 graduate of GHS. He played baseball and basketball for the Silver Streaks. Chad had a scholarship offer to play baseball at Illinois State but was drafted by the Kansas City Royals. He is currently playing catcher with their Class A affiliate, the Lexington Legends in Lexington, KY.
Kyle Hunter is a Galesburg native, 2008 GHS grad and current pitcher in the Seattle Mariners organization. He joined us on the WGIL Morning news.
Kyle played football and baseball for the Galesburg Silver Streaks. He was drafted out of high school by the Tampa Bay Rays. He decided to forgo professional baseball and accepted a scholarship to play in the Big 12 @ Kansas State University. He was drafted again by the Yankees and chose to stay with the Wildcats. Following his junior season at KState, he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners. He signed a contract and has steadily worked his was up the ranks. He is currently on a rehab assignment at the Mariners spring training facility in Peoria, AZ and may be assigned to Triple A Tacoma upon his release to play.
The Galesburg Silver Streaks baseball team takes its 6-and-5 record on the road this afternoon to play at Pekin.
Former Silver Streak pitcher Kyle Hunter joined us today on the WGIL Morning News. Kyle is in Arizona, awaiting his assignment by the Seattle Mariners to start the new season, after missing the opening days due to a groin injury suffered in spring training.
The Galesburg Silver Streaks baseball team is looking to snap a 2-game losing skid as they play this afternoon at Bartonville Limestone. Coach Arnie Gonzalez’ Silver Streaks had won four straight prior to losing a pair of games on Saturday. Their record stands at 5-5.
