Another weather wipeout for local sports
It looks like tomorrow’s anticipated snowy weather will hold off this evening, so a number of the area girls high school basketball games can be played. One of those is in Abingdon, where the Tornados will host North Fulton. In Monmouth, the Titans will clash with West Hancock. A couple of other area teams will be on the road, as United travels to Wethersfield and ROWVA heads for Stark County.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Saturday’s winter weather wiped out a number of sporting events, but some went on as scheduled. One that did not go on was the Silver Streaks Girls Basketball team’s home game versus Peoria Manual. That game was cancelled. The GHS Freshman Girls, however, did play, but lost to Moline, 56-43.
Head Coach Mike Reynolds and his Silver Streaks boys basketball team will begin the second round of Western Big 6 Conference games tonight when they host the Alleman Pioneers.
The Quincy Blue Devils will be in town tonight for girls basketball game at John Theil Gym, where our Galesburg Silver Streaks girls will be looking for their 15th win of the season. The odds look pretty good for the Streaks, as Quincy is yet to win a game this season, while GHS is 14-11.
Area schools are back in session today, so the round of sports postponements we saw early this week is over. Tonight, the area girls basketball schedule shows:
The Knox and Monmouth College men’s and women’s basketball teams will return to Midwest Conference play tonight. Knox will be traveling to Mt. Vernon, Iowa to play the Cornell Rams, while Monmouth will be at home to the Grinnell Pioneers.
The Silver Streaks girls will be trying to take momentum from last night’s win over Alleman into tomorrow’s matchup with state-ranked Morton. The Streaks topped Alleman 53-49 behind 20 points from Haley Kelso and 13 from Sabrina Clay, as they improved their record to 13-8 for the season.
Following several nights where girls basketball grabbed the headlines, it’s the boy’s turn on this Friday evening. In Rock Island, a long-awaited matchup between the Rocks and our Galesburg Silver Streaks will be a battle for first place.
