JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois county outside Chicago says it’ll soon allow residents to text 911.
Voters around the country are headed to the polls today to cast their votes in a number of different races.
Voters may have voted against a public safety sales tax that would operate and upgrade 911 services in Knox County. The financial picture, however, has not changed. During last night’s Knox County Finance Committee meeting, members discussed the possibility of trying the tax again during November’s General Election.
If a tax increase of any sort was on the ballot in yesterday’s primary election, it more than likely was rejected.
Voters in Knox County said “no” to a quarter-percent sales tax increase for public safety purposes by about a three-to-one margin. The proceeds would have helped pay for the 911 system in the county according to Sheriff David Clague — he says the system desperately needs upgrades. As it stands now, Clague says he doesn’t know if the 911 system will continue to operate as-is.
