Knox County went to the polls Tuesday and elected new aldermen, board members and in some cases mayors in several communities.Terri Peterson became the Mayor of East Galesburg, after being inspired to run after a comment from the current mayor about how he’d prefer a man to fill a vacancy on the board.

She defeated Brodie Grice, the Chief of the East Galesburg Volunteer Fire Department by about 30 percentage points.

Peterson tells WGIL she’s learned a lot from campaigning and actually serving on the village board for a few months.

“I think there’s a lot of miscommunication between the board and what’s going on in the city and the residents; so that’s something that I really want to take a look at to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Peterson says.

Also, two incumbents were voted off the Village Board of Trustees in Debra Cassens and Diane Gilman.

Patricia Weaver, Connie Miyler, Karen Kraft were newly elected and incumbent Darrell Corbin will continue to serve.

Abingdon elected new Aldermen in Jennifer Mangieri and Jeffrey Brown.

Leslie Wilt had been filling in the City of Knoxville’s City Clerk duties since Charlie Gruner had to step down, but on Tuesday she won a 2-year unexpired term.

Voter turnout was 11.5 percent according to County Clerk Scott Erickson, down from 26 percent in 2017.

Terri Peterson became the Mayor of East Galesburg, Leslie Wilt became Knoxville City Clerk , while Jennifer Mangieri and Jeffrey Brown were elected to Abingdon City Council.
