Car crashes into Chicago suburb’s new police station

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) – Officials say a car went out of control and crashed into a Chicago suburb’s new police station, badly injuring the driver.

Arlington Heights police say crews had to free the 44-year-old driver from inside the wreckage and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the Sunday evening crash.

Police say investigators believe the car was speeding when it spun off the road and flipped over before ending up on its side against the building near its front entrance.

Construction of the new $28 million police station began in summer 2017. Officials say no one was inside when the crash happened.

The building didn’t appear to sustain significant damage, but wasn’t immediately known whether the crash would delay the station’s planned grand opening later this month.
