Cemetery Trees Trimmed Before Lincoln Funeral Reenactment

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Preparations for next month’s reenactment of Abraham Lincoln’s funeral include tree trimming at Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Around two dozen volunteer arborists trimmed live trees and removed dead ones from the historic cemetery where the slain president was buried.

Thursday’s trimming work included at least half a dozen so-called “witness trees” old enough that they were standing during the burial 150 years ago.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that arborists were concentrating on trees in the valley leading from the original cemetery entrance on First Street to the receiving vault where Lincoln’s body was placed and where his funeral was held.
