Put on by the Galesburg Historical Society, the downtown Chocolate Festival is back this weekend for it’s 30th year.

Debbie Sugai is the event coordinator with the Historic Society. She tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL that the festival has old favorites, like Coney Island’s chocolate chili, but will be welcoming at least one new entry.

“The newest addition to our chocolate family this year is Henn House BBQ …,” she says. “They’re doing the chocolate covered bacon. I guess they have a specialized recipe for that.”

This year’s festivities will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the 156 East banquet room on Main Street. Last year, which was the first time the Chocolate Festival had been held at 156 East, saw almost 900 people on the first day, Sugai says.

Admission is $10 at the door or $8 in advance.

Sugai says the sweet treats offered at the buffet aren’t only provided by local establishments.

“We have several businesses that are very supportive with us,” Sugai says. “But about 70 percent of our chocolate comes from out of people’s kitchen.”

She adds that people come from at least a 100-mile radius for the festival, including those from Ohio, Indiana and Iowa.
