SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois and federal officials will work toward producing standards for labeling products as compostable under legislation Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed.
Sponsoring Rep. Sam Yingling, a Grayslake Democrat, says the law signed Friday directs the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to cooperate with federal work groups on a consistent label which allows consumers to determine whether a product container can be composted. The label would also help them decided on the proper public waste receptacles.
Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat from Deerfield, carried the bill with Democratic Sen. Melinda Bush of Grayslake in the Senate. Morrison says the label would be similar to the arrows-in-a-triangle logo that designates recyclable products.
