Concert for Carl Sandburg’s 140th Birthday

January 6, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$5

New Yorker David Nagler will be journeying to Illinois to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Carl Sandburg’s birth. This birthday concert features Nagler’s new musical project Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems on Saturday, January 6 at 2 p.m. at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg.

Nagler has put Sandburg’s “Chicago Poems” to his original music. He first read Sandburg’s “Chicago Poems” in the fall of 1998. He liked the characters and predicaments Sandburg had written about. It was 10 years later that Nagler began writing music and melodies for those poems. He released his CD “Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems” in 2016

David Nagler is a Brooklyn-based musician, composer, singer, and songwriter. As musical director for Wesley Stace’s Cabinet of Wonders, Nagler has performed with over 125 different artists including Joan Baez, Aaron Neville, Rosanne Cash, Fred Armisen, Steve Earle, Moby, Andrew Bird, and Graham Parker.

In 1916, the poet, journalist, biographer, musicologist, and orator Carl Sandburg published his collection Chicago Poems to great acclaim. This work helped establish Sandburg as a poet of the people. Carl Sandburg was a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, a collector and performer of America’s folk songs, social activist, poet, and biographer.

One hundred years later, David Nagler reimagined 16 of the most revered poems from the collection as a musical song cycle. “The project has been a true labor of love. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to set to music poetry that, 100 years later, is still beautiful, powerful, and relevant,” Nagler said.

The Sandburg birthday concert will be in the Sandburg historic site’s Barn at 313 E. Third Street, Galesburg. Following the performance, there will be the opportunity to visit with David Nagler while enjoying birthday cupcakes. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. This concert is sponsored by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association, the Galesburg Community Foundation, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
