Congress-approved $1.1 trillion spending bill benefits area

Bustos picDespite some reservations, President Barack Obama applauded Congress today for passing a $1.1 trillion spending bill.

In a statement issued by 17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, the East Moline Democrat said the legislation “makes significant investments in workforce training, Head Start, community health centers” and other areas in the district, such as care for veterans and national security.

Bustos goes on to say that the bill makes funding available for “key priorities,” including the Rock Island Arsenal, Thomson Correctional Facility and YouthBuild programs.

Among her listed priorities was Head Start. Legislation provides $9.2 billion for the program, an increase of $570 billion compared to last year.

In August, Bustos announced a $2.2 million grant awarded to the Knox, Warren and Henderson county Head Start programs through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources.

With the spending bill approved, Obama said during a news conference today that Congress is ending the year on a “high note.”
