A decision on allowing golf carts and utility task vehicles on Galesburg city streets is coming next month.
Galesburg City Council had an ordinance governing the use of golf carts and UTVs on first reading Monday night.
These vehicles would be limited to lower-volume streets in town. Operation of UTVs and golf carts would be restricted on Main, Henderson, Losey, Lincoln, and Seminary streets as well as Carl Sandburg Drive, Monmouth Boulevard, and Linwood Road.
Sections of South, Fremont, Farnham, and Broad street would also be restricted. A map of where they are and aren’t allowed can be found below. UTVs and golf carts will be allowed to cross restricted roads at intersections controlled by stop signs or traffic signals.
Operation of a UTV or neighborhood golf cart would require a valid driver’s license and the operator would have to be 18 years old while passengers must be at least 8 years old.
Galesburg Police Department inspections will need to be conducted to verify working safety equipment and an annual $100 permit will be required for all persons operating these vehicles and liability insurance will be required.
Alderwoman Sarah Davis indicated Monday night that she was not supportive of the ordinance as it was rejected by the traffic committee.
“This came back with a rejection of the idea due to the safety of our residents as well as the additional efforts that would be required by the police department that is already stretched thin to uphold these ordinances and ensure that people are within the law.”
The ordinance as it is currently will be back on the agenda on August 1.
