Election 2022: Several important races on the national, state, and local levels

It is election day across the country and voters will go to the polls for races on the national, state, and local levels. 

Democratic Governor JB Pritzker is running for re-election against Republican State Senator Darren Bailey and Libertarian candidate Scott Schluter.

Democratic Attorney General Kwame Raoul is running for re-election against Republican attorney Thomas Devore while Democratic Treasurer Mike Frerichs hopes to beat Republican Representative Tom Demmer and be re-elected and Comptroller Susana Mendoza hopes to win re-election against Republican Shannon Teresi.

After today, Illinois will have its first new Secretary of State in 24 years. Jesse White is not seeking another and voters will have to choose between Republican Representative Dan Brady, Democratic mayor Rockford Alexi Giannoulias – a former Treasurer in Illinois, or Libertatiran Jon Stewart. 

Additionally, voters in Illinois will decide if a proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitution would guarantee workers the right to organize and bargain collectively for wages, hours, and working conditions.

On the national level, with Cheri Bustos not running for re-election, her 17th Congressional seat is open with her Republican opponent from 2020 Esther Joy King, and former meteorologist Eric Sorensen battling to take her place in Washington. 

Locally, the election that will probably have the biggest impact on Knox County citizens’ day-to-day would be the sheriff’s race.

With Sheriff David Clague not seeking re-election, it will come down to Republican Knox County Deputy Jack Harlan versus Democrat Williamsfield Police Chief James Robertson. 

Contested elections are found across the board for Knox County Treasurer, and County Clerk/Recorder as well. 

Longtime Republican County Clerk Scott Erickson is facing a challenger in Democrat Tracy Thierry-Roberson and Democratic Treasurer Robin Davis faces off with Republican Janet Windish. 

All 15 seats are up on the county board where. Within Galesburg, in District one there are five vying for three seats, in District two there are six vying for three seats, and in District Three there are another five.

Outside of the City of Galesburg, Four individuals are seeking three seats in both District four and in District 5.

Another race being watched is the open vacancy on the ninth judicial circuit bench in Knox County where Scott Shipplett once sat. Republican Attorney Ken Hogan faces off with Democrat Public Defender David Hansen.

Polls are open until 7 o’clock tonight. WGIL will have live election coverage as votes are counted and results come pouring in.
