Galesburg City Council met last night and approved the purchase of an air blower for the water division.

This piece of equipment aids in the back-washing of filters in the water treatment plant that city administration says is a “critical part” of the water treatment process.

Back in June the blower failed and was replaced on an emergency basis.

This new purchase would serve as a backup at a cost of about $6,000.

Aldermen also approved an extended timeline for completion of infrastructure work on the Gale Village subdivision.

That’s an area of planned commercial and residential properties North of Aldi Grocery Store that are being developed by Mike Martin.

The City approved Martin for a $775,000 loan last September which Martin will pay back over 13 years at 2 percent interest.

He has been using those funds to do a laundry list of infrastructure improvements which include installing storm water retention and drainage, construction of city streets and connections, and installation of public utilities.

City Manager Todd Thompson says that crews have started but Martin doesn’t think they’ll be done by the Sept. 25 deadline. After a 6-0 vote that date is now Dec. 31.

The rezoning of a property on West Carl Sandburg Drive, the location where a thrift store would like to develop, was on first reading last night.

Aldermen had no discussion on the matter.

Prior to the Council meeting Mayor John Pritchard read proclamations declaring it both Pain Awareness Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
