GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) — A school district in western Illinois will give a high school diploma to an African American man 55 years after he was denied one because he attended a picnic at a park where blacks weren’t allowed to go to at the time.

The District-205 Board at a special meeting yesterday voted to approve the design development documents for construction of the new school, estimated to cost 18-million dollars by the time work is completed in 2016.
A job that was being handled by the District 205 Superintendent has added a new face.
During last week’s Galesburg Board of Education meeting, Tammie Bolden out of Springfield was announced as the district’s new Curriculum Director.
The Galesburg School Board will go back to the drawing board to figure out how to sell Cooke Elementary School.
That’s because the board this afternoon voted to reject both of the bids received for the just-closed facility: one from West Central Community Services Head Start for $200,000, and one from the Galesburg Rescue Mission for just over$279,000.
Members of the Galesburg School Board approved a resolution last night allowing for the sale of Cooke Elementary.
The school was recently recommended for closure during this year’s budget talks – something that caused community discussions in both the City and area non-profits.
