Lead expenditures dot tonight’s council agenda

A number of items relating to the control, abatement and testing of lead highlight tonight’s Galesburg City Council agenda.

Among those items include grant assistance from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to replace lead service lines in town.

Galesburg has been under scrutiny for increased lead levels found in samples of lead lines for more than two decades.

Aldermen are expected to decide whether or not to apply for that assistance which comes with a price tag of $117,500, the majority used as a 25 percent match.

The public infrastructure grant would provide $450,000 in assistance.

Meanwhile, council will decide whether or not to complete a corrosion control study for $36,000 as well as purchase roughly $11,600 worth of phosphate inhibitors.

The study will be used to identify the most efficient way to keep lead below exceeding levels, while inhibitors already used to treat water need to be renewed, as the supply runs out in 30 days.

Funding for each lead related item would come from the Water Department’s budget. Council meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall.
