Macomb attorney, Emily Sutton appointed 9th Circuit Judge

Judge Paul Mangier’s replacement on the 9th Circuit bench has been announced.
Emily Sutton’s appointment was announced on Friday by Illinois Chief Justice Thomas Kilbride.

Sutton underwent an extensive application, evaluation and interview process that included a review by a special judicial screening committee.

Chair of that committee, Timothy Bertschy says Sutton has a “broad background in civil law” at both trial and appellate levels, as well as criminal law at the appellate level.”

Sutton also co-authored the Illinois Civil Trial Handbook in her time as a contract author for Thomson Reuters Corporation.

She’s worked in private practice since 2008, currently with Lucie, Scalf, Sutton & Bougher out of Macomb.

Sutton’s appointment will begin August 12 and expire in December 2020, at which time the seat will be filled by the winner of a general election in 2020 which Sutton could run for.

Mangieri retired on July 3, after serving as a 9th Judicial Judge since 2007.
