Normal Considers Sales Tax Hike; Bloomington Must Also OK

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) – The Normal City Council is considering a sales tax increase, but officials say the hike will only be approved if the neighboring city of Bloomington follows suit.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports the tax increase would be up to 1 percent.

Normal leaders would use the money to help pay for mental health care, public transportation, economic development and a new community soccer complex.

Normal Mayor Chris Koos says he’s had “very base-level discussions” with Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner about the increase. Koos says: “We want the tax rates to be the same in both communities.”

Koos says if both communities raised taxes they could bring in between $4 million and $16 million more in revenue annually, depending on the size of the increase.

The rate is currently 7.75 percent.
