At the open house of Pegasus Manufacturing today, the company that moved from the Silicon Valley to Galesburg in 2014 announced a partnership with a major international machine tool manufacturer.

SMTCL will be working with Pegasus to provide machining services.

Pegasus Co-owner Ray Whitehead told a packed factory floor the announcement means the creation of a sister company.

“We’ve created a separate company, Pegasus Machine Tool, that’s specifically designed to sell SMTCL equipment and at the same time, use that equipment to manufacture the Pegasus Manufacturing product line.”

Jerry McCarty is COO of SMTCL. Looking around the room, where elected officials, community leaders and students with the Galesburg Area Vocational Center were gathered, McCarty said manufacturing was far from dead in the state.

“For me, to see all you people here, shows me that manufacturing is alive and well in Illinois,” McCarty said.

Carl Sandburg College President Lori Sundberg said she would like to see manufacturing expand in Galesburg.

“We lost a lot of jobs in the early 2000s and we want to support any of our manufacturers here who are expanding,” she says. “It’s good for Galesburg.”

Sundberg said the school is starting two new certificates in machine tooling as a result of the community college’s partnership with Pegasus.
