Peoria Airport Aiming For More International Flights

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Officials at Peoria’s airport say they hope renovations in the works will help the facility compete for passengers wanting to international.

Construction on a two-gate expansion at Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport is roughly 40 percent done.
Airport director Gene Olson told The Peoria Journal Star during a tour this week that the $9 million project is slated to be finished in spring next year.

He says it’s going to add domestic capacity and set the stage for expanding flights to international destinations in the coming years, like to Mexico and the Caribbean. That’s in addition to the corporate overseas flights currently offered at the airport.

Olson says such a schedule would allow the airport to compete beyond a regional level.
