A Knox County judge has rejected a deal that would have resulted in the teenager accused of opening fire the Saturday of Railroad Days back in June essentially getting out of jail.

Knox County Circuit Court records indicate Judge Scott Shipplett rejected the deal reached in the case of 18-year-old Latrell Patterson, which would have seen Patterson plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of Possession of Ammunition without a Firearm Owners I.D. Card in exchange for time served in jail, and a plea to a count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, resulting in a stay of a one-year prison sentence.

Patterson retrieved a gun from a waiting car during a fight that spread to the Railroad Days carnival area, and fired at least twice.

The felony charge carries a maximum of three years in prison.

The Register-Mail reports Shipplett said he was shocked the potential prison sentence, and the maximum under state law, were so low. Once the judge rejected the deal, the paper reports, a man in the courtroom audience was arrested after yelling expletives and racial epithets.

The man whose identity was not immediately known faces a Disorderly Conduct Charge.

No word on when Patterson will be back in court.
