Rauner 'A Little Worried' About Common Core-Linked Tests

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner says he’s “a little worried” about new standardized tests linked to Common Core education standards.

The Republican told a group of school administrators Wednesday he’s not sure how he feels about the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers tests. But he says “I certainly don’t want federal government controlling our curriculum.”

The PARCC exam is based on Common Core education standards that have been adopted by a majority of states, including Illinois.

The Chicago Teachers Union and parent groups have objected to the exams over concerns of too much emphasis on tests. Legislation is pending to give parents the right to opt out their children from the test.

Rauner says: “We do need a rigorous, consistent, non-politicized way to measure student growth.”
