Recovery still underway in Coal City after June tornado

COAL CITY, Ill. (AP) — Coal City is on the way to recovery after a June tornado damaged more than 800 properties.Matt Fritz is the village administrator in the northeastern Illinois town. He tells The (Joliet) Herald-News  that “a lot of residents are bouncing back.” Fritz says the village is seeing more work in its building department. The June 22 tornado was an EF-3 with wind speeds up to 160 mph.

Fritz says the village has issued 227 permits and 61 demolition certificates since the tornado. The 61 demolished buildings don’t include the 15 homes destroyed in the path of the storm. The village will have to demolish three buildings at its own cost.

Officials say work will start in January to repair Coal City Fire Protection District’s Station 2.
