ST. LOUIS (AP) — Illinois farmers know they’ve got a banner corn crop on their hands, but getting it out of the fields is proving to be an ordeal.
With record amounts of corn to harvest this fall, the process is definitely going to take longer than normal.
The forecast calls for a perfect stretch of weather on this first week of autumn, but many are farmers are playing the waiting game before beginning harvest.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wet, cool conditions across much of Illinois have put farmers behind schedule in bringing their corn in from the fields, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
The stormy weather has passed, but left its’ mark on fields in some locations around the area.
Recent rains have been beneficial for many of the area crops as they finish the growing season, but may be adding fuel to a late-season disease in soybeans.
As we approach mid-August, farmers concern for their crops is turning away from a need for rain, and towards the need for growing degree units. Agronomist Lance Tarchionne says plenty of warm sunshine should finish off what figures to be a great yield for corn and soybeans.
