State of Illinois to Open New Drivers’ Office in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A new drivers’ service office will open this week in Champaign-Urbana, where there hasn’t been one since last November.

Henry Haupt is a spokesman for Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Haupt tells The (Champaign) News-Gazette that the new office will open Tuesday. The city’s office closed last year when employees complained about poor air quality. Customers since have had to travel to Rantoul, Tuscola, Monticello and Westville for drivers’ services. Limited services were available at the Champaign Public Library.

Haupt says the new drivers’ facility is larger and has more parking available.

The Illinois Department of Labor and an environmental services firm monitored the space and found unusually high levels of carbon-dioxide when it was filled with customers. That building has since been torn down.
