Voters came out to cast their ballots, no major issues seen in Knox County

Voters in Knox County and the City of Galesburg made their voices heard Tuesday.

Knox County County Clerk Scott Erickson says that usually for midterm and gubernatorial elections he’d see about 50 percent for voter turnout. This year it was much higher.

“Well, normally, you’re usually looking at a good turnout for these off-cycle elections right around that 50 percent mark, and the county rolled in at about 61.4,” Erickson told WGIL on election night. “So, we surpassed that. We were getting good results and reports all day from the polling locations that they were sitting pretty heavy. Our absentee and vote-by-mail numbers were up.”

Erickson says that the permanent vote-by-mail applications could have resulted in a higher than previously seen number of mail-in ballots that were cast. The City of Galesburg had 51.79 percent turnout.

Erickson said there were no major hiccups seen at polling places in the county. “You’re always going to have little glitches here in the machines acting squirrely there, printers malfunctioning here or there. But, nothing catastrophic or nothing crazy.”

Champaign County apparently had some internet issues at polling places, according to Erickson. “Knox County, we avoided all those problems. It was a busy day. It was a very eventful day but we made it through and another very successful election in the books.”
