Western Illinois University agriculture club wins award

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — The agriculture club at Western Illinois University has won top honors in an annual competition.

The university in Macomb announced Friday that the club won first place in the College Aggies Online Scholarship program competition sponsored by the Animal Agriculture Alliance.

The $5,000 first place award will be used for agriculture student organizations at Western.

About 70 students are involved in the agriculture club. The award recognized their outreach activities such as organizing a canned food drive, which collected more than 500 pounds of food, and hosting an agriculture trivia game at the university’s Livestock Center.

WIU School of Agriculture Instructor Jana Knupp says the contest helped her students work on their communication skills, including talking with people with differing views.
