Winnebago County lake to be dredged, reopened

LOVES PARK, Ill. (AP) — The state of Illinois says it plans to dredge Olson Lake in northern Illinois so that it can be reopened as a swimming lake and beach.

The (Rockford) Register Star reports that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced the plans for the Rock Cut State Park lake in Winnebago County lake weeks after the same agency announced that it would close the lake this year because of warming water temperatures and siltation.

According to the paper, last month’s announcement caught state Rep. John Cabello of Machesney Park by surprise.

Cabello said he would work to get the lake fixed and reopened – leading to the recent IDNR news release about the plans to dredge and reopen the lake.

It is not clear when the dredging will begin.
