Peoria Police Start Using Upgraded Digital Radios on Tuesday

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — The Peoria Police Department is getting a new emergency communications system.

The department will start using its new digital radio interface on Tuesday morning. The Peoria Fire Department will follow on June 23.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that the digital system upgrade replaces analog infrastructure that’s been in place for decades. It brings new technology and capability to first responders and will allow direct interagency communication.

For example, users of the new Peoria County system will be able for the first time to make direct radio contact with Illinois State Police.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office has been using the system since earlier this year.
