CHICAGO (AP) — A 20-year-old man is dead and his best friend since grade school is charged with aggravated drunken driving and reckless homicide after a crash during a drag race in downtown Chicago.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the accident happened early Saturday on a stretch of Lower Wacker Drive that is a popular area for illegal drag racing. Prosecutors say 18-year-old Ivan Sanchez was racing his Jeep against a BMW driven by Jose Luvianos Jr. They say Luvianos clipped the front of Sanchez’ Jeep. The Jeep struck a concrete beam, and Luvianos’ car crashed into two concrete pillars.
Sanchez suffered minor injuries and Luvianos died at an area hospital. Sanchez’ attorney called it a tragic accident.
Prosecutors contend that Sanchez’ blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit.
