Bloomington considers private operator for city golf courses

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — The Bloomington City Council is considering turning over management of the city’s three golf courses to a private company.

The Bloomington Pantagraph reports the council will begin discussions Monday to determine if outsourcing operations could save the city money.

A community budget task force recommended last year that the city explore selling one or all three municipal courses. The panel also suggested using an outside firm.

The golf courses are supposed to generate enough revenue to cover expenses. But last year the city spent about $450,000 to subsidize operations at Highland Park, The Den at Fox Creek and Prairie Vista.

Another $1 million is needed for capital improvements.

Mayor Tari Renner says if the city proceeds with a private manager no deal would be final until next fall.
