CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced a goal of building nine more miles of protected bike lanes this year and 50 more miles in the next three years.
The city announced targets for safer bicycle lanes Monday. New 7-foot-wide, curb-protected bike lanes on 31st Street extend from Michigan Avenue to the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. They were installed during a resurfacing project last year.
In 2016, the Chicago Department of Transportation plans to install nine miles of protected bike lanes and up to 15 miles of other bike lanes. The department also plans to restripe up to 20 miles of the existing on-street bike network.
The department plans to host a meeting Tuesday at the Historic Pullman Foundation to gather feedback on proposed routes.
