Budget, tax levy to be discussed at Galesburg council work session tonight

Galesburg aldermen are now weeks away from needing an FY17 budget finalized and tonight’s work session will likely shed some additional light on how the city’s spending plan will add up.

City Council members have also yet to decide on a 2016 property tax levy. At the regular council meeting last week, motions to pass a 2.54 percent levy reduction were not seconded and the item was not discussed.

City Manager Todd Thompson said council will look at different options tonight, including the proposal to decrease, keeping the current tax rate or even raising the levy.

The city’s Capital Improvement Program is also back on tonight’s agenda.

Aldermen are deliberating potential expenditures on road projects, lead line replacement, parks and recreation projects and more.

Council meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Erickson Conference Room at City Hall.
