Suburban Chicago mother charged in attempt to kill children

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) — Two counts of attempted murder have been filed against a suburban Chicago woman accused of using natural gas in an effort to kill her two children.

A judge on Friday set bail for Tracy F. Johnson of Hoffman Estates at $2 million after prosecutors said she attempted to kill her 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son after arguing with their father. The father did not live in the home.

Hoffman Estates officers were responding Tuesday to a well-being check at the family’s apartment when they found the door blocked. Upon gaining entry, they found the 38-year-old Johnson unresponsive on the floor and detected a strong odor of natural gas.

Police Sgt. Mark Mueller says the children were found groggy, but alert. The three were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for treatment.
The children are now living with relatives.
