WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A judge has refused to dismiss perjury charges against former Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd, who is accused of lying on nominating petitions when seeking re-election in 2016.
Lake County Circuit Court Judge Victoria Rossetti on Tuesday rejected defense attorney’s Jed Stone’s assertions the charges violated Illinois statutes with regard to perjury.
Stone argued prosecutors should have been barred from charging Rudd because he withdrew from the election after his petitions were challenged in late 2015.
Brian Towne of the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office said Rudd withdrew from the election the night before a hearing on the challenges after he was “caught with his hands in the proverbial cookie jar.”
Rudd made headlines when he questioned whether Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Gliniewicz was murdered in the line of duty in 2015. It was later determined he committed suicide.
