ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — A Chicago suburb is finalizing a plan for future downtown development.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that Elgin officials are working on a 167-page draft before presenting it an advisory committee. The plan would have to get a public hearing before heading to the City Council.
The emphasis is on urban development, quality of life in neighborhoods and walkable subdivisions.
Over the years, there have been several comprehensive plans. But Elgin Area Historical Society President Bill Briska says none of them differed too much from the city’s original 1917 plan. It included preservation around the riverfront, building parks and modernizing street.
Back then the city had roughly 27,000 residents. Now there are roughly 112,000.
