Galesburg’s Director of Parks and Recreation hopes that by the end of 2018 the children’s water play feature at Lakeside Splash Zone will be replaced.

Tony Oligney-Estill mentioned the equipment featured in the city owned facility’s middle pool when asked about possible parks and recreation updates for the coming year.

He said the plan was to replace it in late 2018, after the summer swimming season and would be ready for use in the 2019 season.

Ultimately, the project would be subject to city council approval.

Still, Oligney-Estill says city administration is awaiting the completion of the Parks and Rec masterplan due in May, to work off of.

He tells WGIL that the current equipment is original to when the city took over Lakeside in 1996.

Oligney-Estill says that residents shouldn’t necessarily expect a “huge project” coming out of the masterplan.

He says that the scope of the plan is provide direction to the Department of Parks and Recreation for the next 10 to 20 years.

The plan is more to see how well the city’s doing with what they currently offer, see if there’s anything in trend that can be added to what’s offered.

How new ideas are incorporated, he says is up to staff.
